The Differences Between Propolis, Royal Honey and Bee Pollen

Bees have all along been useful to man since the beginning. Honey, their main product, is not only used for nutrition purposes but also as a medicine and an aphrodisiac. Even though people are aware of their health benefits (going by the rising demand), only few would tell you why they have bought bee pollen instead of royal jelly and vice versa. Some may prefer propolis over royal jelly or the other way round, but cannot tell why. So here is a simple break down:

Propolis
Some woody plants secrete a thick paste called resin over their bodies, which acts as a repellent against unwanted insects. It prevents the entry of bacteria and enhances healing of cuts through its medicinal properties. Bees come to collect this substance and process it with enzymes, saliva, and different contents from other plant parts after which it is used to seal spaces in hives to keep intruders away and sanitize the environment.
Since thousands of years ago, communities have used propolis for different healing procedures. Evidence dating as early as 350 B.C shows that Greeks dressed abscesses (collection of pus in body tissues) using propolis. Assyrians used this substance in the healing of wounds and tumors while it formed a significant component of mummification balm in Egypt.

Today, propolis is used in managing tuberculosis, and other diseases brought about by bacteria and viruses. Doctors are also shifting to propolis for the treatment of many types of cancers to include throat, stomach, and bone.  The propolis is also used for sexual dysfunction and stomach ailments, such as peptic ulcers.

Royal jelly
Honeybees are arguably the most complex insects in terms of behavior and body make up. The royal jelly is a highly nutritious substance that is secreted from hypopharynx (a tongue-like structure that is situated in the floor of an insect’s mouth) of worker bees and is fed to all larvae for two to three days after which it is withdrawn.

Only the queen, however, is continuously supplied with a larger share, throughout its lifetime, faster than it can consume, and so the jelly piles up. About 500 grams of this substance can be extracted from a queen's comb in a well-managed hive after a period of about five to six months. This explains why it is short in supply.

The nutritional benefits of royal jelly are immense. It contains crude protein, which is easily absorbed into the body. Laboratory tests have confirmed very high content of trace minerals,   vitamin B6, and ascorbic acid, which are essential for healthy living.

Bee pollen
Just as the name suggests, this substance is primarily formed from pollen grains in flowers. However, it has to undergo natural processing before it is labeled as bee pollen. While collecting nectar, the hairy body and legs of bees pick these grains, which are taken to hives and unloaded into brood cells. The pollens are then treated with honey, enzymes, and nectar by house bees.

In the end, they become a rich source of protein, which is fed to the young ones to facilitate growth. The striking difference between raw plant pollen and bee pollen is that while the former causes allergies to some people, bee pollen can act as a treatment for allergic reactions.

Due to the high protein concentration of this substance, making it part of your meal is exceedingly important. Other nutrients including vitamins, fatty acids, and carbohydrates can be derived from bee pollen in varying amounts depending on the type of tree the bees picked them.

Since the trees where the pollen is picked from, soils, and environment influence quality bee products like propolis, pollen, and royal jelly, more informed people show a higher preference for bee products derived from Sidr tree. This plant is known for its high mineral and vitamin composition in fruits and seeds. Yemeni farmers ensure that their bees are fed purely on Sidr flowers by planting more of these around the hives and cutting away other plants. Their intent is to produce the richest possible contents.

Why the type of tree matters

Literally, you can take only a tiny bit of bee pollen from one region yet get the same benefits as a person who has consumed tablespoons of the bee products from a different zone or source.  It is therefore important to check where your honey, propolis, pollen or royal jelly comes from before you dig deep into your pockets.

Yemeni products are most preferred since Arab farmers have retained their authenticity throughout the years due to religious and cultural demands. While people from other regions may not have any doubts adding artificial preservatives to products, these beekeepers are precise and exact with how their products are presented to potential buyers.

Sidr bee products beat them all

Almost all components of the Sidr tree are medicinal. A drink mixture of its roots and leaves are used in treating gastrointestinal diseases and strengthening the circulatory system. Ash from the bark is applied to snake bites and burns while Chinese traditionalists use Sidr resin for the dressing of wounds and other applications. Combination of these substances has also shown suppression of cancer cells and boosting of the immune system.

Consequently, propolis, royal jelly, and bee pollens that are associated with the Sidr tree are more superior. Even though the tree survives in other regions, the best soils and climate of its native land, Yemen, ensures a balanced proportion of its ingredients. This, combined with the Yemeni culture of purity, gives you the best bee products available for health, longevity, and cleansings.

How to take Bee Propolis

For centuries, many cultures have sung the praises of honey and its healing properties. Honey is, arguably, a superfood, and can be used in many different applications. Bee propolis is similar in nature to honey in its healing components and overall positive impacts on the human body. While most people know what honey is, many people don’t know exactly what bee propolis is. Simply put,  it is a resin that honey bees collect from several botanical sources.  The bees use the resin to fill small, unwanted spaces in the hive.

The properties of resin depend on the type of bee’s utilizing it, the season in which it is being used, and the geographical location from which it is harvested. Honey bees, traditionally, will utilize whatever is available to them at any given time to create the glue-like resin, so the color and components found in the resin differ from region to region. Regardless of the type, however, it has been used medicinally for thousands of years. It is believed to have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

How to Take Bee PropolisPropolis comes in several different formulas. It is available in liquid form, caplet and tablet form, or powder form. Each different kind has different recommended dosages and means of ingestion. Before taking any kind of the resin, or any other natural compound, it is important to read the information that comes with your package, and to follow the instructions. To make things a bit easier, we've gathered information about how to take each available form.

Liquid Form
Liquid propolis can be found in two different forms. One form is mixed with alcohol, and is generally 50% propolis and is rather potent. Generally, this type of liquid comes in a small bottle with an eye dropper. The dropper is what is used to measure and administer the solution. The second liquid form is mixed with water.
This makes it more soluble, and it can be added to other liquids, however, both the alcohol and water forms can be administered by merely squirting the recommended dosage into the rear of the mouth. The alcohol form is, traditionally, waxier in consistence and may be difficult for some people to stomach, at first. Both suspensions should be shaken before use.

Capsule and Tablet Form
Capsule and tablet forms of the glue-like resin can be taken just as any other pill you may need to take. Simply place them in the mouth and swallow with water or another liquid. The capsule and tablet form is simply the powder form of the compound placed into a capsule or formed into a tablet, depending on the type you get. While you will want to check with a healthcare professional about your specific dosage, many agree that 1000mg per day is perfectly acceptable and effective in treating and preventing a host of different illnesses.

Powder Form
When purchased in powder form, it can be mixed with water to create a water-soluble solution, similar to what you would find in the liquid form. For every one part of the powder, you should use 2.5 parts of water. It should be administered in the same way that the liquid form is administered as well, with a tincture.

The Benefits of Bee PropolisBee propolis has long been hailed for its health benefits. For thousands of years, it has been used to prevent and restore health. Medical literature has recently found that the compound has some efficacy in the treatment of cold sores, genital herpes, and mouth pain. It has also shown effectiveness in helping to boost the immune system to fight colds and other viral and bacterial infections.

There is also a belief that it may be helpful in the treatment of nose and throat cancers, stomach disorders, and a host of other conditions.
The majority of its benefits come from the fact that the compound contains natural antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. As an antioxidant, propolis has been shown to induce cell cycle arrest and has slowed growth in some forms of cancer. Further research is currently underway to better understand how propolis works with cancer cells and to prove its efficacy.

The natural compound has also been hailed, in recent years, as a potential treatment for allergies. Those with severe allergies should consult their doctor before taking propolis, as some people are sensitive to the product, itself. Anyone with a bee or bee-product allergy should consult a healthcare provider before beginning this treatment.

Bee Propolis Supplements - Are They All Equal?

Bee propolis has been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. Propolis, simply put, is a glue-like substance that bees create by gathering pollen from trees. The substance is used to fill small holes in hives to create a more protective environment for the bees.

It is traditionally created by honey bees and is believed to contain antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-fungal properties. It has been shown to effectively treat infections, cold sores, genital herpes, burns, and, also shown to reverse cancer symptoms in stomach, bone, and colon cancers.

Research is currently underway to better understand the efficacy of the substance in the treatment of many other medical conditions.

What Forms Do Bee Propolis Come In?

Bee propolis comes in several different forms and can be administered in several different ways as well. Extracts, which come in the tincture jars, are the liquid form of the substance. It can also be found in the form of capsules and tablets, as well as powder, and, in more rarely, chunks. Capsules, tablets, powder, and extract are all extremely popular forms and fairly easy to find, as well.

Extracts, typically, come in two suspensions. One suspension is mixed with alcohol and is considered extremely potent. Because it is mixed with alcohol, it is not soluble and must be taken by squirting the substance directly into the back of the mouth. This can be an uncomfortable process for some, at first, because of its viscosity.

The other form of the suspension is mixed with water, which makes the substance more soluble, and thus, it can be added to other liquids or taken the same way as the alcohol suspension. While it isn’t as potent, it is considered more easily tolerated by the masses.

Capsules and tablets are propolis in the form of pills. In the capsule form, pure propolis is inserted into a gel cap, and the cap is sealed. These can be taken as you would take any other vitamin or medication.  Tablets are similar to the caplets, in that, they are propolis powder formed into a tablet that can be taken orally. Tablets and capsules are 500mg each.

Most holistic healthcare providers advise patients to take 1000mg of propolis a day to alleviate symptoms of allergies and other illnesses, and to boost the immune system. It can be taken in one dosage or can be staggered with one pill in the morning and one pill in the evening.

The powder form of this substance can be taken by mixing it with honey or other liquids, or it may be taken orally. The powder is one of the least popular forms, but it does have many uses and has the same benefits as all other forms of propolis.

While the particular form of the substances does not necessarily denote its quality, the potency of the substance may be different depending on the type. Capsule and tablet formats are easily measured and are generally dulled out in 500mg capsules. The suspension format, on the other hand, is a bit more challenging to measure and you may get varying potencies.

Are All Supplements Created Equal?

The short answer is, no. Some supplements are better than others. The quality of the supplement largely depends on where the resin-like substance is sourced from, the type of bees that have created it, and the region in which those bees are found. Because bees are opportunistic in this pursuit, the resin-like substance will vary significantly from region to region, depending on what types of trees are indigenous to the area.

The best propolis is believed to be sourced from Yemen and taken from honey bees that utilize the Sidr tree. Sidr honey, honey that is cultivated from the same hives that the resin-like substance is harvested from, is world renowned and believed to be the best honey in the world.

This type of honey has been shown to have many high concentrates of antioxidants and flavonoids. Because of this, it is easy to see why this source of the substance would be so highly regarded.

Australian-sourced products are also highly esteemed for its concentration of antioxidants and flavonoids. It is believed that the rich vegetation in Australia allows for the substances to be packed more heavily with the healing properties of antioxidants.

While Australian options are expensive, as are the Yemen-sourced options, they are believed to be among the best in the world and most effective in treating illnesses.

What are the Benefits of Propolis Honey?

Picture
Bees are one of the busiest insects on the planet, gathering plant pollen and building hives as nurseries for their young and for honey production. They are also great harvesters of a currently popular and health-boosting substance called Propolis.

Origins of Propolis

A red, brown or yellow resin secreted by poplar and conifer trees, Propolis sticks to the mouthparts and hindquarters of bees and is carried to hives to seal them and to act as a structural component of hive walls. Interestingly, this resin keeps the hive from decaying and also wards off potential predators.

The word "propolis" actually means "guard in the front of the town."  Wisely, bees seem to understand all the advantages of this naturally occurring substance.

The gathering and use of Propolis by humans goes back decades. And research continues to mount that its health benefits, especially in concert with Yemeni Sidr Honey, are extraordinary and many. Available in powder, liquid, tablet, and capsule forms, and then mixed with this high grade, raw and totally unfiltered honey.

Propolis has its best taste and greatest nutritional value when taken from Sidr trees growing in the wild, such as those that are prospering uncultivated in Yemen. Yemen beekeeping methods use no chemicals or antibiotics to treat insects or their habitats.

Amazing health benefits

Natural health experts tout the many benefits of Propolis honey. One of the most important of these is its anti-cancer capabilities. This substance appears to suppress the circulation of free radicals in the bloodstream. Free radicals are a natural by-product of the healthy cellular process called oxidation.

However, free radicals can be problematic because when they are too numerous, they can damage the DNA of healthy body cells. This can lead to cancer growth. With the intake of this outstanding honey, an individual's has fewer free radicals, and the normal body cells are protected from the damage that remaining free radicals can do.

Also, scientific research suggests that Propolis honey can assist the body in killing any cancerous tumor cells that are already present.
Another important health benefit of Propolis honey is its anti-inflammatory effects.

This is especially important to people who are suffering from auto-immune diseases such as arthritis and Lupus. The anti-inflammatory effects seem to be inherent in the bio-flavenoids present in the honey. These substances decrease harmful enzymes in the body, which lead to inflammation and the pain, swelling, discoloration, and joint destruction familiar to people with arthritis and its related conditions.

Skin and respiratory allergies such as eczema, dermatitis, and sinusitis, are also autoimmune and involve inflammatory processes. Use of this honey reduces the circulating histamines in the bloodstream, and so allergic reactions decrease in number and severity. Moreover, this favorite of bees fights against harmful bacteria and viruses.

The body's natural defenses against disease, whether viral, carcinogenic (cancer-causing) or bacterial, is called the immune system. This honey is shown to strengthen the immune system and to kill certain strains of:
  • staphylococcus (wound and respiratory infections)
  • e-coli (intestinal tract)
  • salmonella (food born illnesses)
  • Candida albicans (yeast infections in the mouth and genito-urinary tract)
  • HIV (the AIDS virus)
  • common cold virus
  • Herpes (canker sores and genital infections)

People with diabetes also enjoy this substance's assistance in healing their skin ulcers, an often crippling and devastating side effect of their condition. Also, many stomach ulcers are linked to Heliobacter pylori, a bacteria which infects the gastrointestinal tract. This honey helps to kill the micro-organism.

As always, parents are cautioned to administer no raw honey to children under the age of 2. Also, people with allergic sensitivities to bee stings are advised to avoid this otherwise healthful supplement.

Take time to investigate the wisdom of bees and the many benefits of Propolis honey.
