 Overview of Non-Hodgin’s Disease
​Lymphoma is a broader term used for cancer originating from the lymphatic system. Lymphocyte, a subset of white blood cells is a vital part of the immune system. Lymphocytes play a crucial role against infectious diseases by germ-fighting mechanism. [1]

It has been estimated that 3% of all cancer incidences across the globe is lymphoma is a type of cancer. Certain hereditary disorders, immunosuppressive medications, and certain viruses are considerable risk factors for lymphoma because of immune system damage. [2]

The abnormal growth of Lymphocytes can cause tumor formation. The metastatic nature of the tumor generates Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treatment prognosis depends upon multiple factors, such as definite subtype of lymphocyte, precise diagnosis, early intervention, and treatment choice. [3]
​B-cells and T-cells are the two types of lymphocyte from where Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma mostly starts. B cells produce antibodies to fight against infectious causing germs. B cells type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma includes diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, follicular lymphoma, mantle cell lymphoma, and Burkitt lymphoma.
T cells lymphocytes can kill foreign invaders directly.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma occurs much less often in T cells. Subtypes of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that involve T cells are less common than B cells type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. T cells type of Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma includes peripheral T-cell lymphoma and cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.

Cancerous lymphocytes involved in Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are not only restricted to the lymph nodes can but can also spread to other parts of the lymphatic system, such as lymphatic vessels, tonsils, adenoids, spleen, thymus, and bone marrow.

​Occasionally, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma can spread to other organs that are not involved in the lymphatic system. [3]
 Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma associated signs and symptoms are:

· Enlarged lymph nodes in neck, armpits, or groin
· Pain or swelling in the abdomen
· Chest pain, breathing difficulty, or frequent coughing
· Fever
· Consistent fatigue
· Nocturnal perspiration
· Unexplained weight loss [3]

Nigella Sativa effective for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Treatment

​Several conventional therapies that are used for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma treatment include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, engineering immune cells to fight lymphoma, bone marrow transplant, immunotherapy, and targeted drug therapy. But these conventional therapies have different side effects. [4]

Anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effect

Researchers expected that using of Nigella sativa essential oil could provide synergistic benefit with conventional treatment for lymphoma.  ​

Antioxidant property and cytotoxic effect

The increased oxidative stress level can be measured through oxidative stress markers, including nitrogen oxide (NO) and lipid peroxides levels. Most of the cancer is induced by an increased level of oxidative stress. In addition, cancer chemotherapeutic agents trigger the enhancement of lipid peroxides levels.

This cancer tissue-specific cytotoxic effect makes Nigella sativa a special chemotherapeutic agent. Moreover, this herbal ingredient can enhance the ratio of T helper cells and T suppressor cells and significantly improve NK cytotoxic functioning. Thus, the cytotoxic effect of Nigella sativa has been potentiated. [7]

Anti-mutagenic effect

Cancer is a result of abnormal cellular mutation. Nigella sativa has an anti-mutagenic effect due to inhibitory effects against mutagens like N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). According to the research experts, Nigella sativa activates detoxifying enzymes which destroy MNNG. Nigella sativa has improved the DNA repairing effect along with DNA replication fidelity. Therefore, Nigella sativa supplementation can reduce and prevent chromosomal anomaly-induced mutation and decrease the cancer risk. [7]
Anti-metastatic activity

Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma invades the local tissue of specific organ structure and gradually spreads to distant parts because of its metastatic nature. Nigella sativa can impede the metastatic nature of cancer. It stops the spreading of the disease to distant organs by down-regulating key fibrinolytic potentials of malignant tumors. [7]
Blocking of cancer signaling pathway

The cancer signaling pathway is usually attributed by modulating some enzymatic functioning, which induces inflammation. The nitric oxide synthase signaling pathway is involved in tumorigenesis by inducing indigenous inflammation. An animal study reported that oral administration of Nigella sativa for 5 days can decrease different inflammatory mediators like interleukin-6 (IL-6), TNFα, factors, and NO levels in blood serum and reduce the risk of cancer progression. Effective against EBV infected B-cells
 
Thymoquinone is a bioactive phytochemicals present in Nigella sativa. Thymoquinone has the potential to suppress the growth of EBV-infected B cells efficiently. [8]

Specification of Nigella sativa use for anticancer activity

Thermal processing of Nigella sativa seeds at 50°C–150°C produces significantly higher anticancer activity associated with a higher thymoquinone oil content and inhibits the NF-κB signaling pathway. [9]
Direction to use

Nigella sativa is usually used as a food additive. However, its health benefits make this herbal preparation special, and in recent centuries health lovers use this as health supplementation. Clinical researchers consider Nigella sativa oil as a nutraceutical because of its potent antioxidant property. Animal research showed that the oral administration of 0.2 gm of Nigella sativa with 5 gm of bee honey per day provides excellent effect against carcinogenesis and protective effect against cancer due to the reduction of oxidative stress. [10]

Experts recommend that a mix of one tablespoon of Nigella sativa oil and honey once a day can be effective for cancer treatment and prevention.
