Honey – Buying Tips
 
When we try to buy honey, lots of questions emerge in our mind. For example:
 
- Which honey is best?
- Which brand shall I buy?
- What’s the difference between raw and pure honey?
- Which type is superior for my health?
- Where should I buy it?
 
And, etc.
 
In reality, it would be tough for me to answer all these questions in detail. There is a lot of variety in it. And, besides, there are more than 300 different types of honey in the United States. They all have different flavors, colors, looks, and smells. Only professional bee keepers can tell you how they differentiate from one another. But, before you buy honey, here are the most common forms which you should remember:

  • Comb Honey: It is pure honey. It is eaten as produced by honey bees. There is no processing, manipulation or filtering. Most health benefits are in this form of honey.

  • Cut Comb Honey: It is also eaten as produced by honey bees. The only thing is in cut comb honey jar, there are chunks of honey comb; make it look more pure.

  • Liquid Honey: Liquid honey is almost like comb honey. There is almost no difference. The beekeepers extract it directly from the hives and put it right into the jar.

  • Crystallized Honey: Real honey crystallizes faster than commercially produced honey. As some time passes, it starts to crystallize because of its glucose and fructose levels.

  • Whipped of Creamed Honey: This is indeed crystallized honey. The manufacturers crush the large grains of crystallized honey and turn it a smooth, creamy texture.

  • Blended Honey: As its name suggest, it is a blend of several types of honey and honey bees that feast on several types of flowers. We actually use this honey in home - mostly.

  • Monofloral Honey: Unlike blended honey, this honey comes from a single variety of flower. For that reason, its flavor and smell is utterly different than other honeys.
 
It is hard to believe, but it has been estimated that more than 75% honey in American supermarkets is fake. It doesn’t have the nutrients which we require for health. Though, these above forms of honey would facilitate you, before you go shopping. But, the real issue is actually in processing and packaging phase. This is where honey gets complicated and most novices make mistakes. For example, if some jar says, ‘It is 100% Mexican Honey’, it doesn’t mean it is 100% pure, or it came from Mexico. The thing you have to look for is processing classification than the label on the jar. You can classify honey in three types.

  • Raw Honey: This is pure, unprocessed honey.

  • Ultra-filtered Honey: It is processed under high pressure to remove impurities. It isn’t as pure as raw honey, but it is very clear in appearance and has a longer shelf life.

  • Pasteurized Honey: In this type of honey, manufacturer use heat to remove all the awesome stuff to extend shelf life. Most honeys in the supermarkets are this honey.

OUR FAVORITE MEDICINAL HONEY RECIPE

1.  MY ENERGIZING HONEY - BLACK SEED POWDER, GINSENG, CINNAMON, BLACK SEED OIL.  1/3 black seed powder to begin with.

2.  THE BEST NUTRITIONAL MIX - USE FENUGREEK, BLACK SEED POWDER AND BLACK SEED OIL.  2 tablespoons of fenugreen to 1/3 cup of black seeds.

3.  REGULAR MIX - BLACK SEED POWER AND BLACK SEED OIL. Start with 1/3 cup of black seed powder.

4.  ANDREW'S MEDICINAL MIXTURE - PROPOLIS, BEE POLLEN AND ROYAL HONEY.  SEE BELOW.

START WITH 1/2 KILO OF HONEY.  MAKE SURE IF USING BLACK SEEDS THAT THEY HAVE BEEN HEATED PROPERLY IN THE OVEN AT NO HIGHER THAN 150C.  THEY SEEDS THEN NEED TO BE GROUND TWICE.  DO NOT GRIND RAW SEEDS.  WATCH MY VIDEO ON HOW TO HEAT THE SEEDS.
When using fenugreek and black seeds, use half the amount of fenugreek (ground) as you do black seeds.  When adding black seed oil, the amount is 1 tablespoon per 1/2 kilo.

Royal Honey is expensive and most will add around one to two tablespoons per kilo but more is better.  Andrews mixture uses bee pollen and that was rough ground.  Normal mixture is 1 cup of bee pollen to 1 teaspoon of propolis to 2 tablespoons of Royal Honey.

Cinnamon is 1 tablespoon per 1/2 kilo and saffron is 1.5 grams per mixture.
My choice of ginseng is Korean, but again that is your choice.

Begin adding the ingredients, stir and wait till the next morning.  The honey will thicken.  The next morning add in more black seeds as needed or other herbs if black seed is not used.
