Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common forms of diabetes that affects a large population worldwide. In this health condition, the blood glucose (type of simple sugar) level rises high due to improper utilization of insulin in the carbohydrate metabolism and is clinically known as insulin resistance.
To overcome this issue, the pancreas secretes more insulin in the initial phase but later unable to make up the balance resulting to rise in blood glucose level. [1] According to the estimated data from World Health Organization, 422 million people worldwide had diabetes in 2014. [2]
Moreover, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) declared 90 to 95 percent people have type 2 diabetes. [3] One of the primary recommendations for controlling blood glucose level is to follow a healthy diet with a low intake of refined carbohydrate products and saturated fat.
A vast change has been observed in current day treatment practices. Most of the doctors prefer to prescribe conventional anti-diabetic medications along with complementary therapies, which include supplementation, dietary management, and physical exercise recommendations.

Royal Jelly Supplementation for Diabetes 2
Royal jelly is considered as a 'superfood' due to its rich source of amino acid, vitamins, minerals, lipids, carbohydrates and proteins content. Royal jelly is a type of secretion that can be obtained from the hypopharyngeal and mandibular glands present in young worker bees. The royal jelly supplement has lots of health benefits for type 2 diabetic patients. Royal Jelly normalizes blood glucose level The presence of insulin-like property in royal jelly has already been published in Journal of Medicinal Food 2009 edition. [4] Insulin-like activity of royal jelly helps to normalize blood glucose level and recommended for the management of type 2 diabetes. |
A randomized pilot clinical trial has been conducted on 50 female participants with type 2 diabetic. In the experimental group, 1,000 mg royal jelly soft gel was prescribed for 8 weeks. After completion of the study period, the experimental group had better glycemic control with significant elevation of insulin concentration with marked reduction of oxidative stress by increasing natural antioxidant activity.
Therefore, experts expected royal jelly supplementation provides a positive outcome in type 2 diabetic patients. [5] In addition, 1000 mg of royal jelly dose for 8 weeks can also reduce the biomarkers of type 2 diabetes, including reduction of glucose, malondialdehyde, and HbA1c. [6]
The blood glucose lowering effect also examined in Justus-Liebig University Hospital in Germany. In this study oral glucose tolerance test showed immediate blood glucose lowering effect within 2 hours after ingestion of 20 gm of royal jelly. [4]
Apart from normalization of blood glucose level, the royal jelly supplement also provides following health benefits, which indirectly reduce the complication associated with diabetes 2.

Decrease oxidative stress in diabetic patients
Hyperglycemic condition in type 2 diabetes often increase the oxidative stress by increasing the production of free radicals. Lipid peroxide is a free radical and increasing the amount of this free radical leads to diabetic complications. [7] Royal jelly supplement is an excellent antioxidant.
The antioxidant property of royal jelly supplement helps to inhibit lipid peroxidation. Experts found that 10-HAD, a chemical constituent present in Royal jelly reduces lipid peroxidation. [4]

Reduce the load of co-morbidities like Obesity and Cardiac disease
Type 2 diabetes is highly associated with obesity and cardiac conditions. [8] The pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes is related with metabolic disorders.
It has been found that the increased level of free radicals is responsible for faulty fat metabolism, which triggers fatty acid accumulation around abdomen and waist. The increasing belly fat increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. [9]
The antioxidant property of Royal jelly reduces the rate of lipid peroxidation and decreases the free radicals load. The reduction of lipid peroxidation and consequent free radicals load leads to increase in fat metabolism and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
In addition, increased fat metabolism also assist to lower the cholesterol and triglyceride level in blood serum. This helps to reduce the diabetes-related cardiac co-morbidities. [4]
Moreover, body weight management is one of the primary measure for diabetes management. Health Promotion Research study published in December 2012 documented that Royal jelly supplement can manage body weight in type 2 diabetic patient by decreasing carbohydrate and total calorie intake. [10]

Foot ulcer reduction
Foot ulcer development in type 2 diabetic patient is one of the common findings, which restrict the movement of the affected individual.
In addition, development of diabetes 2 also delay wound healing process. Journal of Research in Medical Sciences published a research result in 2011, which reported that royal jelly ointment with conventional management accelerate wound healing and relieve foot ulcer within 3 months treatment period.
The result is quite promising as among 8 spotted foot ulcer cases in six patients got healed by 7 foot ulcer lesions. [10]

Direction to use Royal Jelly
Dosing
According to clinical research reports, the recommended dosing for type 2 diabetes is 1000 mg, thrice a day for 8 weeks can provide effective result. However, clinician can alter the dose depending upon the patient’s condition. [6]
How to administer?
The royal jelly supplement is available in capsule or in liquid dosage forms. Organic royal honey from the authentic supplier is essential to get the best result. The available dose of the capsule is 500mg or 1000 mg, which should be taken daily.
However, raw liquid Royal jelly should be stored in the refrigerator. The usual recommended dose is half teaspoonful twice a day, which may change depending upon the patient’s condition. [11]

Get the best result by blending Nigella sativa oil and Royal Jelly
The following recipe made with Nigella sativa and royal jelly can provide the best result against type 2 diabetes. This combination is good for boosting both physical and mental energy.
Nigella sativa is a very effective herbal remedy for diabetic patients because it increases insulin synthesis, glucose tolerance, and beta cell workability. [12] Therefore, a combination of both Nigella sativa and royal jelly supplementation can provide a synergistic effect to achieve normoglycemia. In addition, this combination can also control chronic fatigue condition associated with type 2 diabetes.
Recipe
Mix together one teaspoon of Nigella sativa oil and 3 teaspoons of royal jelly. Take this natural blend thrice a day. [13, 14]
